My Reflections

The Great Depression was a terrible time. I can't even fathom what it would be like to live in that period. Learning about what people had to go through during that time in history makes me better appreciate our country. I have gained respect for my ancestors and the people who went through so much misery. It makes me so sad to think that my great Grandpa Acomb had to grow up in that time. I think about my childhood; technology, toys galore, going out to eat, etc. His childhood, along with thousands of otherts, was so completely different from those of children today. Some people were so lucky just to own one toy, or 2 outfits to wear. Back then, kids were working as early as age 6. When I was six years old, I was curled up in front of the TV watching Barney the Purple Dinosaur episodes all day long, while my mother brought me toast and milk. I believe that the Great Depression shaped how my Grandpa acomb was as a person. That means that I am affected by it because of how he raised my Granma, how she raised my Father, and how he raised me.

America has grown and developed over the many years since the Depression. The Great Depression was a long and sad chapter in America's story, but our nation is strong. Many chapters later, our country has pulled through hard times and is now holding its chest high. The definition of the American Dream is, "The traditional social ideals of the United States, such as equality, democracy, and material prosperity." I believe that our country has finally achieved the American Dream. We have been through wars, economic crises, and depressions to fight for what is right and make our country a better, safer place for its citizens.
